Today we’re going to show you how to easily edit fields in Google Docs. A margin in a document is the white space that surrounds the text in your file. They appear above, below, left and right.

Although the default fields are usually sufficient, it is sometimes necessary to modify them. If you want to customize the Google Docs fields in your next Google Docs document, you need to go to the Page Setup window. Here you can specify the dimensions of the four borders, so that you can make them as wide or narrow as you like.

The only problem with fields in Google Docs is that with many free text editors, the fields are applied to the entire document. However, you can adjust the margin by changing the size of indents, footers, and headers. If you want to make a field smaller or larger, we have a quick guide to editing fields in Google Docs.

What is the default field in Google Docs?

2.54 cm or 1 inch Google Docs and Word also have a default field. These are all fields – top, bottom, left and right. However, if you have special requirements, you can easily edit the field in Google Docs. You can change the field only on the top or only on the left, it’s up to you.

What is Google Docs?

Google Docs is a word processing program. It is a free, web-based software offered by Google. It supports both desktop and mobile devices, including Android and iOS.

Google Docs imposes some restrictions on the page to make it neat and organized. These limitations include page margin, font size, color, etc. Even if you open an existing document, the documents are already present in that document by default. The standard margin is 1 inch on all four sides of a new document. Sometimes you may need to modify these fields to meet the needs of your document, and you can easily change them. In this article, you will learn how to customize fields in Google Documents.

Google Docs makes it easy to edit fields

  • Sign in to your Google account and open the Google Docs website.
  • You can select an existing document to test the process, or you can select a new document.
  • After opening the document, the first thing you need to do is find the two rulers, one at the top of the document and the other on the left side of the document. On it, the lines 1, 2, 3 and so on shall be written.
  • Next, find the arrows formed below, located on the top ruler. You can see that some scales are deepened at both ends. This means that the scale was used before these values. If you now place the cursor on the edge of the dark area, it will change horizontally to a two-headed arrow.
  • You can then right-click where the cursor changes horizontally to a double arrow, then click and drag the cursor horizontally to change the value of the field. You can increase or decrease the margin value. The same goes for the other end of the ladder or ruler.
  • Similarly, if you look at the ruler or scale on the left side of the document. Again, you will notice that part of the line has darkened. If you place the cursor on the edge of the darkened area again, you will see that it changes horizontally to a two-pointed arrow. Use the slider to adjust the vertical margin of the document. The other end of the field is at the bottom of the current document page.
  • This way, you can quickly edit the field in Google Docs.

Margin change with additional options

Editing the top and bottom edges is a little more complicated, with additional options. To do this, click the File tab in the top left corner of the page. Then choose Layout below. A window will appear where you can define all the top, right, bottom and left margins. These options should be on the right side of the window, under the column called Margin.

To edit a field, select the appropriate text field and add a custom number that adjusts the field in inches – for example, the number 1 in the top column of the field will adjust your field down by 1 inch. Similarly, the number 2 adjusts the top margin by 2 inches. Adjust the margin as you wish, or according to the document you received for your education or work.

Done, you have defined the margin of your document. After you click OK, the lines in your document are automatically formatted according to the fields defined in the Page Setup section. Note that all fields you enter are in inches, and this is reflected in the paper version of this document. You can also set the field you entered as the default field by clicking the Set as Default Field button in the formatting window. This will automatically define the same field for all your future documents.

Can you lock the field?

There is no real way to lock the field for Google Docs. You can change them at any time. However, you don’t have to worry about other people interfering with your document sharing settings as long as you set the permissions correctly.

If you are sharing your document with another person – via the resource button in the top right corner of the screen, when you enter an email address or name, you will find it under Can comment or Can view you should under Let them edit if can, they can edit the field, whereas the previous two options would mean they can’t edit anything.

Conclusion:

Editing fields in Google Docs is not very difficult, as you can see in this article. For left and right field it is very easy, because you do not have to leave this page. It takes a few extra steps to place them all, but nothing too complicated.
